Pengaruh Mazhab Fiqah al-Syafi’i: Analisis Terhadap Beberapa Teks Terjemahan Al-Quran Ke Bahasa Melayu
The Influence of al-Syafi'i School of Thought (Madzhab): An Analysis of Few of the Malay Translations of the Quranic Text

Translation is the process of transferring meanings from one language (i.e. the source language) to another language (i.e. the target language). In the process of transferring meanings, translators not only have a wide range of lexical, phrase or sentence choices, but also need to identify the use of meanings that is either literally or idiomatically. In addition, some of the verses of the Qur'an contain several interpretations based on the different dimensional views of school of throughts. Hence, translators who play a role in transferring the meanings are actually committed to certain school of thoughts, which will influence the translation of the Al-Quran. This article is aimed to investigate the influence of al-Syafi'i school of thought on the Malay translation of the Holy Quran. This is a qualitative study and employs content analysis approach. (لامستم النساء) as the Quranic verse that contains fiqh issue is selected as the sample of this study. The corpus of the study comprises of six (6) Malay translations of the Al-Quran. Findings showed that individual translation by Abdullah Basmeih, Mahmud Yunus and Zaini Dahlan and the translation by Yayasan Restu are inclined towards the interpretation of al-Syafi'i school of thought as the literal meaning of it lexical (لامس) which is ‘the contact from skin to skin’ is maintained. Whereas, the translations produced by the Al-Hidayah House of Quran and Karya Bestari did not seemed to incline towards the interpretation of al-Syafi'i school of thought because they added footnote to explain the implicit meaning of the lexical (لامس) which is ‘jimak’. Based on the study on six (6) Quranic text translations that is available on the market and one sample of legal verse, it can be concluded that al-Shafi'i school of thought has huge influence over Malay translation of the Quranic text while there is no denying the existence of the influence of other school of thoughts in the translation of the meaning of the Qur'an.
